
Scientist from Harvard Medical School delivered lecture to UNHAS Pharmacy Students and academics

As one measure to updating knowledge in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, faculty of pharmacy held a public online lecture on 18 July 2023 by inviting a lecturer from one of the most prestigious universities in the world. It was Dr. Novalia Pishesha Tjandrasaputra who was presenting her work on immune engineering and its relation to the precision antigen presentation pathway. Dr. Novalia Tjandrasaputra is a Junior Fellow, Society of Fellows, Harvard University and Instructor Laboratory of Hidde L. Ploegh at the Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) who is now an associate professor at Harvard Medical School.
The lecture was hosted by faculty of pharmacy at Hasanuddin University, particularly guided by our moderator, Nurhasni Hasan, Ph.D. The talk was started by giving overview of immune system and how an antigen precenting cells work. From this concept, Dr. Novalia Tjandrasaputra continued to explain on how specific cells can be programmed so that we can control the mechanism of how antigen is recognised. During the discussion session, several questions were asked by the audiences. In particular, some of them were related to the interests of the audiences in exploring more about the use of certain medication such as dexamethasone on altering the immune response of cells mentioned during the talk. The enthusiastic responses of the audiences described how encouraging the talk Dr. Novalia Tjandrasaputra gave to the academics and students attending the lecture.
The online lecture was intended for academics and students from Hasanuddin University. However, moderator reported that the audiences did not only come from UNHAS but also attended by students and lecturers from neighbouring universities. Therefore, in this opportunity, the vice rector of partnership, innovation, entrepreneurship and business of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Adi Maulana expressed a huge appreciation to Dr. Novalia Tjandrasaputra for being a speaker in this online lecture. The dean of UNHAS faculty of pharmacy, on behalf of the academics and students of faculty of pharmacy Hasanuddin University, also stated a highly recognition to Dr. Novalia Tjandrasaputra for presenting her work to our academic community. It is expected that this type of academic environment will continue to grow even further in the near future.
